MUSIC SOCIETY: The society met on Friday, April 21 for an evening of recorded music, selected by members on a theme of Contrasts in Music. The aim of the selection was to illustrate differing themes, styles, instruments and musicians. The resulting programme was a lively and thought-provoking mix of music from Baroque to the 20th century. Choral works by Tallis and Tippett were followed by some of the Bach Goldberg variations, including No.13 played first on piano and then on harp. Members listened to Elgar's Nimrod as an orchestral version and then played by a famous brass band. Londonderry Air was sung by Bryn Terfel and then played on a plucked dulcimer. To finish was some lively jazz from France and the USA.   more...

ARTS THEATRE CLUB: Pershore Arts Theatre Club had its annual general meeting on April 21. An increase in the annual subscription was discussed and it was agreed that this should be raised for the coming season to £8. There had been a drop in membership during the year and expenditure had risen because of the need to take out accident insurance and the increase in the fees charged by speakers. After the annual meeting had finished, Margaret Mandrell gave a talk, illustrated by a video film and entitled How Much Farther Can I Go? - an account of her walk along the Great Wall of China to raise funds for Acorns Children's Hospice.   more...
