IN his letter headlined "Let's see evidence" (Worcester News, Saturday, July 16) Councillor Geoff Williams' writes "in replying to Councillor Paul Denham over congestion, N Taylor claims: Doesn't this demonstrate that most councillors on the planning committee take their orders from their party hierarchy..."
And then he adds: "Given the stringent rules...this is a serious charge... no doubt N Taylor has evidence for this claim. I would be pleased to receive such evidence. Should that evidence not be forthcoming then a public apology through your letters page, to the planning committee would seem appropriate."
If Councillor Williams' cares to examine his words "N Taylor claims: "Doesn't this demonstrate that most councillors on the planning committee take their orders from their party hierarchy?" he will see that it is not a statement of fact. It is a question.
It is a question because it begins with the interrogative ""doesn't" and ends with the interrogative punctuation mark, namely a question mark.
Shouldn't Councillor Williams' withdraw his letter, unless he can explain how questions become "...a serious charge?"
If we cannot publicly challenge, and question the decisions, made by those we have elected, aren't we living in a dictatorship?
N TAYLOR, Worcester.
n JIM Evans wrote (Tuesday, July 19) of our empty, money-worshipping society. Your leader the same day said: "We're all for bringing more people shopping in Worcester." QED.
What about those who simply visit the Cathedral or sit by the Severn? People today are valued by the size of their wallets, not the contents of their hearts.

n ANYONE without a car who wants to go into town on Sundays can only do so with greatest difficulty.
Perhaps Councillor Geraghty and the powers-that-be have failed to notice that public transport is severely reduced or is non-existent on Sundays?

n I WOULD like to thank the kind lady who found my wallet and took it into the Nationwide Building Society on Saturday, July 16. Unfortunately, she didn't leave her name and address.
It contained all my wages and, in these unhappy times, it really restores your faith in the good nature of most of us.
A CALE, St Peter's, Worcester.
