Draw raises £800

AN Easter event held by Upton Rotary Club will benefit two charities. The club held a grand draw on Thursday, April 8, and raised more than £800 for Macmillan Cancer Relief and St Richard's Hospice. There were 18 prizes on offer, including two hotel breaks and cases of wine and champagne. Club member Peter Dawson said it was a great success and the club was delighted to have raised so much for good causes.   more...

MEMBERS of Upleadon Over 60s Club met at Upleadon Village Hall on Tuesday, April 7. Mrs Hazel Berry welcomed everyone. She read two poems. The first was Mothers Day, the second was entitled Joys of Womanhood. The latter was from the newsletter of Sheppard House in Newent. Bert and Betty Vye showed a variety of slides. Some were from Cornwall, London and Wales. These were much enjoyed. Refreshments were served by the ladies and the usual `everyone wins' raffle was held.   more...

GOOD Friday was observed at St James Church, Staunton by a service of matins and meditation conducted by Canon John Evans and the Reverend Penny Hamer, curate. It attended by a small congregation which included members from churches within the benefice of Hartpury, Corse, Staunton and Maisemore and in particular by one, a mother who with her baby son in a pram had walked from Newent, a distance of at least seven miles - she was given a very warm welcome. The organist Margaret Riley accompanied the singing of the hymns and Prim Goldring took the offertory.   more...

MANY friends assembled at Birtsmorton Church last Wednesday to remember and play tribute to a quiet country gentleman with twinkling blue eyes and a mischievous laugh, who valued the old country ways so much. Bill Peters had lived in the village all of his life, arriving at the age of three weeks old. Bill attended the local school where he met and palled up with a young lad called Charlie Allsopp. This friendship flourished for over 70 years, both of these lads sharing the same interests with a love of gardening and country pursuits.   more...
