OUR usual order of business at our June meeting was reversed, with our two guest speakers providing the first items on the agenda.
First was a report by our link delegate Mrs Pamela Griffin on the AGM in Sheffield.
Next, Mr V Williams spoke on A Personal Pilgrimage. This was a poignant journey he had made to Northern Pakistan in August 1997, at the invitation of the father of a Canadian climber, Jeff Lakes, who had died on the mountain K2 two years earlier.
Mr Lakes senior wished to place a plaque in memory of his son at Base Camp Two, on K2, where his son had died after reaching the summit and having to make a two day descent in appalling weather, having lost all his kit and with no food and water.
This pilgrimage was accomplished on August 17, 1997 when the small group of friends, who had made their own arduous journey up to Base Camp Two, placed the plaque commemorating Jeff's achievement at the place where he had died two years earlier.
Various items were discussed, including orders for the 2005 calendars and diaries, Water For All quiz entries along with local matters such as proposals for the Post Office to be turned into a take-away and Whitbread PLC's successful appeal for permission to build another public house in Wychbold.
The competition for a Mountain View was won by Mary Wormington with Jan Young second.
President Dot Waldron thanked the tea ladies Margaret and Pat and Vi for the pretty flower arrangement.
There will be no meeting in August.
