Display recreates life on Home Front

From the archive, first published Friday 7th Nov 2003.

A taste of life in the 1940s can be experienced at Malvern Theatres until November 15.

A 1940s parlour, complete with gas masks, sound effects and other memorabilia of the period is on display in the foyer.

Chris Bassett, of Malvern Theatre Players, which created the room, said: "It took a few days of running around to organise. We got props from museums in Malvern and Worcester and staff at the theatre also donated items.

"There has been a huge amount of interest from both the older generation, who remember the time, but also the young, who like to see what things were like back then."

The parlour is part of a range of displays at the theatre to celebrate the arrival of the play We Happy Few, by Imogen Stubbs, which opened last night (Thursday) and runs until Saturday, November 15.

Theatre staff have compiled displays charting the history of the Osiris Players, whose quest to bring culture to the people of war-torn Britain was the inspiration for the play. The all-female theatre group toured the country in two Rolls-Royces, staging 1,500 performances between 1939-1945.

Educational workshops, a pianist and jazz band, period costumes and a Second World War jeep are all part of the entertainment planned at the theatre throughout the play's run.
