When the previous administration at Malvern Hills District Council announced its plans to build a brand new headquarters building, we were concerned.

After the financial problems which resulted from Malvern Town Council's conversion of the former Manders chemist, we felt the public would not stomach a proposed £4.6 million investment in yet another new council office and MHDC really needs public support.

With the Government's tendency to centralisation and moves to see old 'shire counties' disappear under the control of large metropolitan areas as a result of regional government, MHDC is likely to face a fight for survival in the near future.

It needs to do all it can now to demonstrate that it is the right body to look after local affairs.

It is because we believe Malvern needs MHDC that we welcome the annoucement this week by new council leader Tom Wells that it will not be pressing ahead with its plans for new offices.

OVER the next week we will be remembering those people who have given their lives in the service of their country.

War memorials countain so many names that as the years pass it becomes hard to appreciate the scale of the human tragedy that war has brought to so many families.

In today's newspaper we feature a Malvern couple who have been working to put faces to some of those names.

Their work helps us all to reflect on the brutal reality of war.
