Plans for cheaper parking

From the archive, first published Friday 7th Nov 2003.

PROPOSALS for changes to car parking in a congested part of Great Malvern have been unveiled.

Double yellow lines will be painted along Como Road and the right hand side of Victoria Road early next year by Worcestershire County Council.

Both roads are heavily used by people who work in the town to park their cars, avoiding charges at the underused Victoria Road car park.

It is estimated that 30 to 40 cars will be displaced as a result of the new parking restrictions.

Malvern Hills District Council will next week decide whether to proceed with a six month trial of cheaper long-term parking in the car park.

The trial will offer workers seven day parking passes for £3, purchasable from the existing ticket machines at the Victoria Road and Church Street car parks. The tickets represent a considerable saving on existing charges.

Nine spaces in the Victoria Road car park will also be re-designated as short stay.

Tina Marshall, a Victoria Road resident, said: "I would really like to see double yellow lines painted along one side of the road, the parking is awful at the moment.

"The residents have off-road parking areas, but because cars are parked right up to and opposite the entrances to them, we can't get cars in or out, so are forced to park on the road as well.

"I think the council definitely needs to lower charges for the car parks, it is such a waste to see them empty like they are at the moment."

Long stay car parking at the car park currently costs £2 per day.

The changes will be introduced early in 2004.
