Hugh's `baby' to celebrate birthday

From the archive, first published Friday 7th Nov 2003.

THE Chandos Orchestra will be celebrating its 25th anniversary with a concert at the Malvern Theatres.

The orchestra is made up of 90 members from across the region.

It was founded by Hugh Field-Richards, who moved to Malvern from Dorset and decided to set up an orchestra in the area.

The concert, on Sunday, November 16, will feature performances of Gustav Holst's The Planets and Elgar's Violin Concerto, featuring the leader of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Peter Thomas, as the soloist.

Conducting the concert will be Michael Lloyd, music director and principal conductor of the orchestra since 1988. He is also senior resident conductor with the English National Opera.

The orchestra performs three concerts a year in March, May and September, as well as two annual workshops. However, unlike most orchestras, it does not meet regularly for rehearsals.

Orchestral manager Roger Clift said: "We started off as a very small group and have grown and grown in recent years, enabling us to take on much bigger pieces.

"We meet up to rehearse two weekends before a concert, making it easier for members who have moved away from the area to travel back and perform with us.

"We have a wonderful conductor and a host of excellent players. The concert should be very good."

On the concert programme for 2004 are performances of work by Bach, Ravel, Sibelius and Mendelssohn, as well as the annual young musician of the year competition in February.

The concert, on November 16, will take place at 7.45pm. Tickets range from £8 to £13, from the Malvern Theatres' box office on 01684 892277.
