PARISH COUNCIL: Much of the discussion of the meeting was centred on the running and upkeep of the playing field. The chairman, Mr Derrick Grainger, reported on an informal meeting to which all users of the field had been called. This had arisen following a request from the police because of a complaint from a local parent. PC Cavendish had asked that a simple set of rules might be drawn up and displayed for general guidance. He also had suggested that the parish council should make a list of the many acts of vandalism throughout the summer, which in total amounted to no small amount of damage. This, he had suggested, should be published in the parish magazine for parents to see, and to encourage them to question their own children. It was agreed by the parish council that all ratepayers and families had the right to use the field up to the time of scheduled matches, especially since corner flags and goal posts were not erected until immediately before the start of games. Also it was agreed to observe a trial period to see if things ran smoothly without a specific set of rules. A reminder was issued that no cycles should be ridden on the field, either by adults or children.   more...

Harvington

NEW HALL: Harvington C of E First School is now the proud possessor of a newly-built hall and what a splendid building it is, much larger when seen from inside than one imagines, filled with light and gleaming new surfaces and almost ready to use. Almost, because there are some finishing touches to be made and various necessities still to be bought and fitted, but the colourful hall, changing rooms and storage rooms are all ready and waiting and it is understandable that both staff and children are longing to be in there. There is to be a permanent acknowledgement of the school's religious foundation and its ongoing connection with St James' church in the provision of a special table which will do service as an altar during the regular assemblies which will continue to be taken by the Rector, but, apart from this, the hall will become gymnasium, dance studio, drama forum, music room, lecture hall and, not least, a very attractive amenity available for rent by members of the community which Mrs Palmer, the headmistress, hopes it will serve for many years to come. She is to be most warmly commended for her foresight and energy in pursuing this dream through many years of difficult negotiations and unseen obstacles, but she in turn, pays great tribute to the support she has had from her board of governors, members of her loyal staff and the PTFA, without whose understanding and commitment she says she would long ago have felt defeated.
