THE New Year started well for the institute. In January, we had our party, when nearly 50 members and friends enjoyed plenty of good food and company. To crown a splendid night, Christine Paterson entertained us with what she called `hazards of entertaining.' She recalled singing to a crowded working men's club and was just reaching the high note of her song, when the club manager called out: "Ladies and gents, the pies have arrived," and Christine found herself singing to an empty hall. She sang a number of well-known choruses for us, accompanied by Shirley Willis, who gallantly offered to play the piano in the absence, through illness, of Miss Paterson's mother. more...
